Estrogen…Still
Looking For A Home
Well, the medical community is about to strike another blow and confuse
consumers again. First, estrogen is being prescribed the "best"
therapy for hot flashes and pre-menopausal symptoms, but only to find
out that it may increase the risk of breast and uterine cancer in women.
Secondly, estrogen is prescribed as the answer for osteoporosis, only
to find out that it does not increase bone mass, but merely slows down
bone loss and exposes women to other risks of cancer. Dr. Susan E. Brown,
Director of the Osteoporosis Education Project in Syracuse, NY, states,
"It is now abundantly clear that the natural lowering of estrogen
levels at menopause is NOT the cause of osteoporosis, and that we have
seriously misunderstood the menopause-osteoporosis link. Several dangerous
implications, in fact, now flow from this faulty assumption."
Thirdly, estrogen is prescribed for the treatment of Alzheimer’s
disease, only to find out that it is not a good idea to use it on the
elderly because it has not been proven to improve symptoms and it puts
patients at risk to cancer and other debilitating diseases.
Fourthly, it has been determined that estrogen therapy prescribed for
heart disease and stroke in women, has in fact increased women’s
risks of these diseases. According to the St. Petersburg Times, April
5, 2000 an article entitled "Study: Estrogen therapy may increase
heart risks", and an article in the Tampa Tribune, April 6, 2000
admitted with trepidation, that estrogen therapy prescribed for long term
usage is downright risky at best.
Let’s clear up one thing for sure. Estrogen therapy can be helpful
to women who are estrogen deficient. Unfortunately, every woman at about
the age of 40 is prescribed this hormone without a clinical indicator,
and furthermore the same dosage is prescribed. This is not evidence based
medicine at all. What’s even worse, is that the synthetic form of
estrogen and progestin rather than natural forms, are conveniently packaged
and pushed on woman as though it is the safest and only answer to all
their woes.
Estrogen, taken in the slightest excess, becomes a dangerous promoter
of cancer. We see it everywhere. Yes, you have read it here. In the past
six months, numerous articles have been published, warning women of the
dangers of this hormone.
The common practice of medical doctors to casually prescribe estrogen
for any type of premenopausal, menopausal or other condition is irresponsible,
dangerous and downright criminal. Medicine continues to revel in their
own ignorance. There is entirely too much information documented today
that warns the consumer and doctors about the dangers. What’s more,
is that there is so much more information documented on natural approaches
to women’s healthcare issues.

Stay informed and question any healthcare professional who encourages
the use of estrogen therapy. Estrogen will continue to look for a home
in other women’s healthcare issues. It’s big business. Remember,
there are always alternatives.
