Natural Tips that are Frugal and Safe

Here are a few examples of practical and inexpensive home cleaning ideas. These tips will make a natural believer out of you.

Jet Dry Substitute
Instead of spending money for a commercial rinse agent like Jet Dry for your dishwasher, use plain white vinegar instead. You only need to fill the dispenser every few weeks. Your glassware will sparkle, spot-free and the inside of the dishwasher will remain very clean, too.

Poison and Mousetrap Substitutes
Instead of buying mousetraps and poison bait for pesky little critters, stuff steel wool, available in hardware stores, or Home Depot, in the holes around the plumbing pipes under the sinks in your bathrooms and kitchen. The mice do not like the feel of the wire on their little footsies or their tongues and will look somewhere for an invitation.

Oven Cleaner the Non-Toxic Way
Most commercial oven cleaners have a very strong and lingering smell. For a fresher approach, add (1t) one teaspoon each of liquid soap, lemon juice, vinegar and borax to one quart of warm water. Apply liberally to the inside of the oven and allow it to sit on a greasy mess for at least 30 minutes. Then scrub. Presto, a clean surface.

Pesticide Substitute
For white flies, aphids and fruit flies, mix (1T) one tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap in two cups of water. Apply to affected plants using a spray bottle. Make sure you saturate the undersides of the leaves. You may have to repeat this application several times. This is a non-toxic treatment that will not harm the plants, the kids or the animals.
