Oldies but Goodies

Growing up with a mother who came from the "Old Country" exposed me to natural remedies at a very young age. It was fascinating to observe and experience how much better I would feel after using one of these remedies.

Antibiotics were used ONLY when bacterial symptoms were present such as a change in mucous color, fever, or strep throat. Salt water gargles or hydrogen peroxide gargles were used to ease sore throats, ginger ale or Pepto-Bismol was used to settle an upset stomach, and mentholated chest rubs such as VICS was used to relieve congestion.

As an adult, I still use these remedies and encourage others to do the same. What’s even more exciting is that these remedies are making a real come-back to consumers who choose to treat common ailments more naturally.

Below are a few remedies that are worthwhile learning about.

Body Odor
When the liver is overburdened by processed foods, fats and chemicals, more toxins are eliminated through the skin, which in turn increases body odor. Molly Linton, N.D., suggests that zinc may reduce body odor by helping the liver break down toxins more effectively. Her suggestion is 30 mg of zinc daily.

Bumps and Bruises
In order to reduce swelling and pain, apply ice to the injured area as soon as possible. Keep the ice on for fifteen minutes, then remove the ice for fifteen minutes. Repeat this several times. You will notice a significant difference. The next day, apply a menthol ointment. This increases circulation, which speeds healing and reduces discoloration. Rub the ointment gently onto the affected area several times a day until the injured area begins to clear.

Burns
Apply cool, wet tea bags until the burning sensation subsides. If it is sunburn, make a quart of strong black tea and add it to a bathtub of lukewarm water. After a 10-15 minute soak, dry off, and apply vitamin E lotion or aloe vera straight from the plant. The burning sensation will ease considerably and healing will begin.

Indigestion
There are several remedies used for indigestion. Dr. Christiane Northrup uses Swedish bitters for digestive upsets. The bitter and pungent herbs contained in the formula stimulate digestion and relieve intestinal gas. Papaya also soothes the tummy and charcoal capsules absorb intestinal gas and tummy upsets. Papaya can be used after every meal to ease the digestive process. Charcoal should only be used occasionally when the need arises.

Stiff Muscles
After a hard work day out in the yard for the weekend warrior athletes, try soaking in a hot rosemary bath. Fill the bathtub with a comfortable amount of hot water, add eight drops of rosemary essential oil diluted in one teaspoon witch hazel, mix into the water. Soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Massage the sore muscles while soaking. For those who have access to a home tub hot tub/whirlpool, soak in the tub and rest the sore muscles against the water shoots for massage and warmth.
